Iceland, Southern Coastlands

Farmland, Southern Coastlands, Iceland

My first organized tour got me out of the city and into the very flat coastland along the southeastern shoreline. I was shocked at how much it reminded me of Oklahoma. The flat land lends itself to farming, and while the soil is rich and fertile, the harsh climate and short growing season limit the number of crops which can be grown. Potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and turnips are pretty much the extent of the viable crops. However, the nearby town of Hveragerdi is known for it's geothermally heated greenhouses where attempts at year-round farming are continually being tested and utilized, limiting the need to import some crops.
