As a volcanic island, Iceland is encircled by deep black sand. Such sand is not as common in the Atlantic as it is in the Pacific. Because of it's proximity to America, some scenes from Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers were filmed on Iceland's black beaches, rather than flying to the Pacific.
