Fishing Implements, Skógar Museum, Iceland

While most natural resources are scarce in Iceland, fishing has always been a mainstay in the country's life and economy. Here are some tools of the trade, including several pairs of mittens with two thumbs (center of photo). These were devised to deal with the wear and tear from pulling on cold, wet ropes; when one thumb wore out, the fishermen simply flipped the glove around and kept on hauling.
