Driftwood, Skógar Museum, Iceland

One of the most fascinating and informative stops was the Skógar museum. Started from the personal collection of Þórður Thómasson, it has grown to house artifacts from all regions and time periods of Iceland's history.

Natural wood is scarce in Iceland; less than one percent of the island is covered with trees. Because of this, early settlers would scrounge every piece of driftwood they could find and mark it with their own unique symbol (much like cattle branding in the American West).
